Subj: Incredible Hercules #118 Review-What strikes fear into the heart of an elder god? Posted: Wed Jun 18, 2008 at 05:26:24 pm EDT (Viewed 31 times)
Overall, I think this is another solid issue featuring the Prince of Power. With this series and several others from other comic companies the Lion of Olympus' star seems to finally have risen. Even the DC Hercules was turned into a good guy. A lot occurred in this issue compared to many issues nowadays. Following last issue the opening page gives a review of each member of the God squad, point of origin, etc. in a ring announcer type way. Ajax gives a brief history on the Skrulls dealings with alien gods in the past and the importance of this mission. Cho raises a good point about blaming the Skrull gods, but so far they do seem to be supporting the invasion so I think his point is fairly mute. They run into the edge of the Dreamtime where Cho tries some mental calculations and learns ht hard way that he can be the smartest person on Earth it won't do him any good here. Herc seems happier than he has been in a long time and gives a rundown on who matches up with which Argonaut. Snowbird and Cho have a nice talk that seems to give some foreshadowing about the task Cho may have to do and answers a long standing question: Why is Snowbird, an Inuit, blond-haired and blue-eyed? We finally get to Nightmare. For those of you who might not know Nightmare is not a god per say in the same way Herc and co are. Instead he is some form of minor mystical entity that rules over the nightmares of humanity. He has had a few run ends with Dr. Strange, is an enemey of Sleepwalker, and probable not on friendly terms with dream gods or gods who live in dream like realms. At some point he captured an alien being that knew the way to the Skrulls gods and is willing to exchange it for the fear of the gods. Left with little choice the gods agree allowing old nightmare to hook them up to his machine to suck the fear out of them. We learn what each of the gods is afraid of. We learn why Hercules is reluctant to take Cho with him. Why Cho's numbers ability may be a somewhat of a curse. Snowbird's survival guilt. From Atum, we learn a good reason on why Surtur seemed so eager to start Ragnarok all the time. Sadly, we do not learn what Mikabushi fears. Turns out the trickster had something else in mind and uses his shapeshifting powers to escape ant attack Nightmare. Cho's pup snaps Hercules out of it allowing him to lay into Nightmare causing the dream demon to let loose everything he has against them including the dreaded I. R. S. One of my favorite parts has to be Hercules' forward thinking of distracting Nightmare while Mikobushi stole the map. Snowbird at the end is distraught over everything that has happened so Herc comforts her the way he does best with the ladies. In the previous issue Athena warned Cho he will have to do the hardest thing he will ever have to do. The end of this issue strongly implied what that was and the traitor being someone I never suspected. Overall, a solid issue. One of my concerns was how Atum's power would be treated, but by having him voluntarily trapped in Nightmare's machine and the ensuning battle was brief enough that I didn't have any problems with it. Hercules is stepping up to be a leader. The fears of each character made sense and this linked well with past Alpha Flight issues. I am curious as to how the traitor issue will be dealt with. We learn Nightmare won't be effected by the Skrull take over. Art wise no complaints. Oh, by the way cho's pup if finally named. Alot happened. No glaring story or art issues. Looking foward to next issue. 8.5/10
