Ayers was a pilot during the Vietnam War,
serving at Marble Mountain Airbase in 1968, where he met Frank Castle
(see: Punisher II).
Years later he meets Frank at the Vietnam Memorial wall in
Washington.

Vietnam Memorial in Washington. Tells Frank that he met Chris Hoyle
yesterday, and that Hoyle wants Ayers in on a drug deal from Bolivia
to "Rockhouses" in USA. Tells Frank that he hasn't decided
whether or not to join the operation yet. Informs Frank that there is
a "Rockhouse" in Lasalle St. in New Yotk City. They talk
about how Hoyle manages to get his namer on the memorial wall when he
actually survived the war. Frank ask Ayers how Hoyle found him, and
Ayers tells him that he isn't that hard to find, with him being a
regular family guy with a wife and two kids. Frank tells Ayers that
he should stay out of the deal, and Ayers tells Fran that he planned
on doing that, thinking himself to old for that commando stuff
anyway. A few days later Frank learns that Ayers had died, alleged
killed himself)
