Source of Powers: Experimental chemical and radiological treatments.
Powers/Abilities: Enhanced physical strength and agility.
Cause of Death: Fell down from great height
First Appearance: The Cat # 1
History: Dr. Joanne Tumulo, a University of Chicago professor, developed a series of chemical and radiological treatments which would "make it possible for ANY WOMAN to totally fulfill her physical and mental potential -- despite the handicaps society places upon her." (see: Tumulo, Joanne) The project was funded by Malcolm Donalbain, a physical fitness entrepreneur who had become acquainted with Dr. Tumulo when he asked for her help with his haphephobia (the fear of being touched).(see: Donalbain, Malcolm)
Although Dr. Tumulo wanted to use her assistant, policeman's widow Greer Grant Nelson, as the first subject, Donalbain forced her to accept his choice for the "first lovely guinea pig," Shirlee Bryant (see: Cat II). After several weeks, Shirlee acquired superhuman physical and mental capabilities such as ultrasensitive hearing, an eidetic memory, and and physical strength and agility. It was then that Donalbain unveiled her Cat costume, one of dozens of skin-tight yellow bodysuits and cowls with blue gloves, sash, and boots. The costume was more than decorative, since, first, the two folded hyperbolic horns forming the cowl's cat-earred openings acoustically coupled to the wearer's own ears. Second, the passive infrared images superimposed by the mask's eye coverings provided superior night vision. Third, the clawed gloves and taloned boots contained retractable razor-sharp stainless steel blades. Although reluctant to put it on, with her heightened abilities Shirlee rapidly adapted to the strange outfit.
Shirlee was to be the prototype for an army of Amazons Donalbain planned to create. Using his nationwide chain of health emporiums, his force would slowly subjugate the entire country. Donalbain had one more addition to the uniform Shirlee wore, a studded blue collar. Once the naive blonde donned the collar, she became helpless to resist his commands. All Donalbain's trainees would wear the "will-nullifiers," reducing them to mindless minions. "The perfect woman! Totally obedient -- and strong enough to do anything I command!" he exulted.
