I'd go for the bottom bunk, just seems more convenient.

I'm the new guy. So I don't make that choice. And that means the top bunk. No one prefers the top bunk.

Top bunk is better, you'd feel somebody climbing up for a cheeky snuggle and give you a chance to repel your would be cuddler.

You'd feel it on the bottom, as well, and it's much easier to defend yourself on the bottom.

Basically, the top bunk needs the bottom bunk's approval to do anything. It's awkward to even access the top bunk without asking the bottom bunk for permission. Come bedtime, you don't just climb up. You ask the bottom guy if it's okay to climb up.
