Subj: In the News: The issue of Jerusalem

Whatever your opinion of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, it was widely agreed that the issue of Jerusalem was to be settled via a two-state solution. Jerusalem is occupied territory, and any settlements there are illegal. America's recognition of the occupation is not just symbolic, it has legal ramifications.

Under Trump, America now endorses the Israeli occupation and has forfeited its role as the broker of peace on a two-state solution.

This may not work out in Israel's favor. By officially removing America from the peace negotiations, the Palestinians will seek statehood and damages via the international courts. Previously, the pretense was that America was operating in good faith for the Palestinians. The international courts will certainly act now.

Why did Trump do this? One word: Evangelicals. The Evangelicals have a very... lets say, apocalyptic view of Israel and Jerusalem, and their allegiance to Israel is based on ye old scripture (basically religious anti-Semitism, whereby Jews are fodder for Christian salvation).

The union of Evangelicism with the worst elements of Israel (thus fulfilling the goal of Jerry Falwell) was perilous to begin with, but now things are going to hit overdrive in the months and years to come.
