I'm just curious about when it first happened. At Marvel I think you can point to Fantastic Four #5 and say that was their first instance of it (Dr. Doom invented a time machine).

Anyone have an idea when the idea was first used in a DC comic? Did it happen often in the Golden Age or was it an idea you really saw more of in Silver Age stories?

Rip Hunter might have been the first one to make a career out of it starting in 1959, Showcase #20.

But the villain Per Degaton had a time machine back in 1947 in a story that has been referenced and followed up on many times, All-Star Comics #35.

I can take it further back by offering All-Star Comics #10, mid 1942, which has a story focusing on a possible Bomb Defence Formula for the war effort and a connecting time-travel plot reaching to the 25th century. This might well be the first time-travel story in a DC comic, so far as I am aware Superman didn't learn the ability until the latter part of the 1940's, which leaves only Jay Garrick:The Flash as an obvious possible contender....

Also, summer of 1942, Leading Comics #3, had the Seven Soldiers of Victory fight a villain with a time machine who first brought criminals and conquerors to the present and then fled to the past. The following year, the Dummy (foe of the Vigilante) used a time machine to send the members to different time periods.

The first comic DC ever published - New Fun #1, cover dated February 1935 - begins a series titled 'The Magic Crystal of History', the premise of which is two kids being transported back through time for various adventures by the crystal.
