No spoilers although I do talk a little about the book in the way a solicitation would. But if replies include spoilers, I'll come back and edit this post to mark the spoilers box.

I'm sure we're getting the series thanks to the upcoming TV show but still, I never miss a chance to read about Black Lightning. I've loved the guy since Batman & the Outsiders.

Unfortunately the TV show looks like nothing I want to watch. The star is 47 years old. In the show he has two kids and an ex-wife. He returns to superheroics after nine years of retirement. I don't know. Maybe. I might warm up to it. I just hate family dramas as a rule. Family sitcoms also. Family anything. I never want to watch families. My life is family. I don't want to watch my life.

Meanwhile, the comic is really special because it's being written by Tony Isabella! Not only is Tony Isabelle a Bronze Age writer, which tells you right off the bat that he's better than 90 percent of the writers working today, but he and Trevor Von Eeden created Black Lightning! It doesn't get any better than that.

The artist for this series is Clayton Henry and he is exceedingly good. This is some of the best art I've seen in a while. I think we got this terrific artist because of the TV show. But that's fine by me.

The comic takes place in Cleveland, which is Black Lightning's home town. In his day job he's a teacher, and this is given a lot of focus in the comic. As a teacher he's important to the community. This isn't Clark Kent being a reporter because it gives him an excuse to leave the workplace. Black Lightning has two vocations, teaching and fighting crime. Both matter deeply to him.

The villain is Tobias Whale, a crime boss. Tobias Whale is also the villain on the TV show. I doubt the TV show version will be as menacing as the comic book version is. The comic book version is one of the best villains ever.

I would love to see this six issue mini-series turn into an ongoing. Are you buying it?
