Black Bolt 004 (2017)
This issue was the same as Jessica Jones #11 and All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #7, also out this week, in that all spotlighted most of the pages on a secondary main character's backstoy flashback that helped lead said character to where they are now. This issue was EASILY the most enjoyable of the 3 for it's content - and unfortunately probably also the WORST artistically of the 3. The whole Origin of The Absorbing Man was much more satisfying content than what could be gleaned from the brief episodes about Maria Hill Target of SHIELD or Drax The Pacifist in the other titles.
First of all, for all the Creelaholics out there: how much of Crusher's origin was new? In particular, did we know he had worked for The Owl and did we know all that backstory abuse he took from his father? The only nitpick blatantly missing from Crusher recounting his life to Black Bolt was the blatant omission of they'd met years ago in the pages of Dazzler.
The cover choice image was terribly odd, if not wrong. (Unless you can figure out the symbolism?)
The followup from last issue's suicide mission conclusion was perfectly sound. The damned Groundhog's Day-ish cycle continues. Black Bolt is spared death only to be punished with Creel by the mysterious BIG BAD prison warden entity. Being tied to a post with each other with only each other to talk to, all issue with some kind of beeping countdown, may sound like an odd 'new' death sentence and not that exciting - but it was a fun read. We see how they come to respect each other, learn how they'd face inescapable death without fear, and we hear a heck of an Origin retelling.
The last page arrival and guest appearance was such a happy moment for both of the 2 prisoners. To hear BB finally enthusiastically shout that name was heartwarming. THEN, things quickly flip into such a (hopefully momentarily) sad ending, for Creel that is, worded neatly by the first paragraph in the Letters Page.
Did YOU read and enjoy this? Or did you like those other 2 issues better?
