MTIO is coming back and we've seen Valeria and Franklin in the Legacy one-shot, and an Alex Ross picture of Reed and Sue circulated for a bit. While it looks like Marvel may be gearing up to bring the FF back my concern is: then what?

The FF's absence has been compared to Thor's sabbatical several years back. When the character returned he had a new status quo and there were several changes made both to him and the supporting cast. While over time a lot of these changes didn't last, the book and character were revived successfully.

I really don't have a lot of excitement about a FF return if we wind up with the same old FF prior to the book's cancellation. Johnny and Ben fighting, Ben losing fights, Johnny's maturity merry-go-round, Sue breaking up fights and being a frustrated team mom, Reed lost in the lab and keeping secrets--this has all been done before and if it's what fans get when they return sales will most likely spike and in short order drop steadily until once again cancellation looms.

I know a lot of fans think that it's the book's consistency that is one of the things that makes it special but unless the FF tries to break new ground I think any potential return will be much ado about nothing.

What type of changes would you implement? I have some ideas of my own floating around in my head.

Of course I still think that the whole question of a FF return is practically moot anyway because I can't see Marvel committing to a book and concept while the movie rights issue is still a big deal to upper level Marvel execs.

Mine are all horrible.

1. I would reveal Ben's brother Dan had gotten a girl pregnant before his death. Ben would find out he has a nephew (Daniel Grimm III) in his early 20's and takes the kid under his wing. Eventually the kid leads another one of those annoying teen versions of super hero team books that are always popular enough to exist but never quite popular enough to last 100 issues. Oh and he'd have a crappy codename like Little Thing or Thing Jr.

2. Johnny's flames would turn blue. I would have him turn blue as the result of an experiment by the Red Ghost. Red Ghost and Reed Richards powers were both enhanced by a second dose of cosmic rays in FF #197. Ben turned into the more powerful pineapple Thing when he got a second dose in FF #310. So I'm assuming an extra dose would also change Johnny (and Sue come to think of it...but she can already slice through Celestials like a ginsu knife does a tin can)

3. The Fantastic Four would fight Kang. Valeria would be erased from existence (and everyone's memories) via a plot device called a retcon bubble. When Franklin gets hit by a retcon bubble he turns into an 18 year old, loses his powers and he goes off to college never to be seen again. Instead of annoying kids running around the Fantastic Four adopt a dog.

4. Johnny and Sue would discover their father Franklin is still alive. The Skrulls sent an imposter to die in his place with that explosive. The real Franklin Storm has been a prisoner of the Skrulls for years. The Fantastic Four eventually find out and rescue him. Reed has to deal with a degenerate gambler for a father in law who manipulates Sue and Johnny.

5. Doctor Sun has been masquerading as H.E.R.B.I.E. for years. He's never figured out a way to restore himself.

6. Werner Von Doom turns out to be the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver's father. He had a thing for gypsy witches. Scarlet Witch finds Victor to be a slightly less self centered brother than Pietro. Doom apologies for any time he's tried to bang her in the past.

7. Uatu's evilish nephew Aron takes his place as Watcher for earth which is his punishment for always being a dick.

8. Sharon Ventura gives up on men and becomes a lesbian and then dates Thundra.

9. Willie Lumpkin has been a Recorder working for the Rigellians all along!

10. Sue would get breast cancer. After she recovers (her husband is good with science) she becomes an activist.

I like this idea, particularly the name "Little Thing". He'd still beat his Uncle in a fight I bet.

What would the change in flame color do to his powers in terms of enhancement. I miss the days when Stan would give him a new flame power every other issue, like the ability to cast heat mirages.

I am so on board with the Valeria idea.

I've often thought about bringing him back. He'd be a good foil for Reed, someone to tell him what an ass he can be.

I'd bet most fans don't recall Doctor Sun.

Lol. Maybe Vic's origin can be messed with as well, making Agatha Harkness his real mother.

I once theorized that the dead Uatu found is really Aaron and the real Watcher is still around plotting schemes cause he's sick of earth heroes, particularly the FF.

I would think there's probably legit facts to support both of them going in that direction. Thundra was trying to score with She-Hulk at one time if I recall and Sharon certainly came across as a butch prison mama.

Can recorders get cancer? I think Wily recently got it didn't he?

I've been wishing for Sue to take on an activist role for quite some time. I'd revamp her powers but that's a post for another day.

Lol, no. \:\-\)

Warren Ellis told one story per issue.

Each issue focused on one aspect of Moon Knight (urban detective, former mercenary / spy, occult detective, action man, etc.).

The idea was to show why Moon Knight was cool to begin with.

Story per issue?

This is All Newish Kinda Sorta Different Legacy Future Proof Marvel we're talking about. Now, a story fit for one issue spread across six...

Except that they brought Thor back much sooner. I don't think we will see the FF in full form again for some time. There needs to be a shake-up at Marvel. The FF is slowly fading to obscurity as cinematic continuity replaces actual comic continuity.

If they do bring them back, the really need to put top talent on the team - best art, best writing. And some creative risk taking. Without that, it will just fail.

No easy answer here. Regardless, I would love to see them back though. I'd certainly support an FF title - if it was respectful of the original Jack/Stan work.

I think a new status quo is a good idea for the FF when and if they return. It needs to happen if the team is going to remain relevant. The first thing I would do is return the Fantastic Four to Central City, California as their new home and headquarters. The reason behind this is to isolate them from the Marvel Universe as I'd like the focus to be on creating new characters and threats there maybe for the entire first year of publication. Something only the FF can handle and explore.

Being the oldest and first team of the modern hero era I would also have them take on an almost JSA like role focused on legacy. Now that there's no longer an Avengers Academy they could restart the Future Foundation as a school to train the next generation of heroes and super-scientists. If successful this book could be an engine for spinning off new characters and titles. I'd love to see Central City be built up in the same manner as Marvel's New York in the 60's.

That's just my two cents and how I'd handle a rebirth of the Fantastic Four.

Solid ideas! I agree that a new start, new headquarters, new location is in order. Not sure I like California as the location, but getting them out of NYC is a good start. Weren't they on a space station as some point? It might also be cool to give them a starship and a crew (yeah, Star Trek) for exploration. Sort of like a mobile Baxter building. Also probably done at some point, but on a smaller scale. A huge ship might be cool.

Lots that could be done with the FF with some careful planning and thought.

You hit upon what I was getting at. If they are just brought back to bring them back and to appease fans it will most likely fail without a plan to really revitalize the concept and characters.

I like your ideas, particularly the change in setting. New York has about 100 super powered characters per square foot. I'd also tweak their powers but I think I'll start another post about that.
