http://www.cbr.com/marvel-legacy-trailer-return/

herald on the last page the return of a "Marvel Icon" that will "break the internet".

So let the speculation begin.

I figure it is either:

1. The REAL THOR, GOD OF THUNDER

2. Captain Mar-Vell yes the upcoming movie is the Carol Danvers Captain Marvel, however Marvel is all about Legacy stating that classic heroes return but NOT at the expense of the new versions....meaning they think there is room for them all.

Thus going by that logic, there is room for both Carol Danvers AND Captain Mar-Vell.

This however presumes that Marvel has finally gotten the backbone to permanently revive Mar-Vell instead of brief/fake revivals.

Also is Mar-Vell an icon? I say yes. Once upon a time, in his first life THANOS had obtained a cosmic cube and used it to merge with the universe thus becoming one with it and thus basically God. Who was it that divined his weakness and stopped him? Captain Mar-Vell

There are some that do not know or remember that Mar-Vell was the first one to stop the Mad Titan, that role would later go to Adam Warlock and then Drax the Destroyer.

Also given how long Marv has been dead and given HOW he died, yes his return could send some serious shockwaves through the internet.

But it will more likely be THOR that returns. However I don't see his return as internet breaking but something that is simply expected and LONG OVERDUE.

I hope it isn't Mar-Vell.

They have played with fans of his legacy for years.
I love the character and always will. Ive got my CM 25-33 and would never part with them.
I think he is better remembered as a true heroic icon. Not to mention the greatest story he was ever in was the touching story of his death.

Yes but what other marvel icon coming back would break the internet like they are saying?

THOR? We know he's getting the hammer back, his return is overdue and not web breaking.

Adult Jean Grey/Phoenix? Meh. How many times has she died and returned?

Original Human Torch? Last I checked he is still functional and semi retired as marvel just cant figure what to do with him.

TORO? not internet breaking at all and not dead last I checked.

The Golden Age Vision? not dead, just in comic book limbo until they do another anniversary event with the golden age characters again.

Richard Ryder? he's back as I recall

Adam Warlock? he's not dead at present

Spirit of 76/Patriot/50's Cap? Not web breaking at all.

Tony Stark? Meh, we know he's coming back already, hardly web breaking

UATU the Watcher? hmmm....not quite web breaking but would be a nice return.

Original Nick Fury? with all the Social Justice Warrior garbage and that Marvel wants to keep some characters linked up with the movies, I can't see them restoring him from the Sam jackson version that is running around. Though his return would stir up things up a bit.

Mar-Vell still would seem to be the "internet breaker", but again Marvel doesn't have the guts to bring him back.

Ok, You make a good point.
However I will except one of two Captain Mar-Vells returns.
Mar-Vell post earth-x Marvel return, post the most recent secret wars.
Or Mar-Vell returning for Hostess ads.
Otherwise Ark could be right with Uncle Ben.
And an arrgument could be made for professor X.

Oh, I disagree. When Thor returns, the web will be broken with Jane Foster fan tears.

Only twice.

Not even semi-retired. He's a big shot in SHIELD and was pretty active during Secret Empire: Brave New World.

Not even sleep breaking. ZZzzzzzz...

I really don't see enough people caring at all about Mar-Vell to break any part of the Internet. Mar-Vell is barely a D-list character.

They're already doing an X-Men arc with spirit Xavier in Astonishing X-Men.

Or the introduction of Marvel Man to the proper marvel universe?

It is well over due.

There would be people that think Mar-Vell returning is a slap in the face to all cancer victims and their families.

But if other characters can be recycled regularly and brought back, then why not Mar-Vell?

As to Jane Foster, I don't think she will perish, I have a hunch there will be a last minute save with either the utlimate/war-THRO hammer going to her or a replica of Mjolnir being forged for her or KOBIK will step in and save her.

Yeah last I heard Xavier exists on the astral plane with the Shadow King.
So eventually a new body will be prepared for him and he will download himself into it.

As to Mar-Vell, perhaps he has reached the point where he no longer likes being dead and all the recent upheavals with the cosmos have prompted him to return.

I really don't even see them caring enough about that. I've always been sorta insulted by his death.

I wasn't even thinking about her dying. Thor just becoming worthy again is going to be enough to flood the Internet with Jane Foster fan tears.

Honestly, I'm not even sure Xavier needs a body. For 50-odd years, he may as well have not even had one.

Agreed. If Mar-Vell comes back, It should be a big deal.
Eternity and Death should show up and agree that the universe needs him.

And yes I know all about the weird stuff going on in ultimates.

The problem is finding a niche for him after all this time. Carol's got a lock on his name. Maybe they can do something like Odinson for him? I'm kidding!!!

There's no shortage of cosmic types (almost all of which are being ignored or misused). Does the universe really need him? Is Marvel sincerely going to enhance their cosmic stuff? They really don't seem committed to that. But let's hope, whether Mar-Vell returns or not.

Well his name is really Captain Mar-Vell but upon arriving on Earth, humans misunderstood and said he was Captain Marvel ;\)

Seriously though, Carol could keep the name especially since the impending movie is her as CM and not Mar-Vell. Mar-Vell is still Captain Mar-Vell and he can spend some time on Earth or when he is not needed dwell among the stars with Elysius, his lady love (presume she's still alive)

Still if the EIC states that there is room for the legacy and new versions, that includes Mar-Vell in my opinion.

Well the Death of Captain Marvel was a touching tale, however it was a catharsis for Starlin to write it due to his father, and it was also part of the business deal so that he could work on Epic Illustrated and give us Dreadstar.

Any similarities between Dreadstar/Mar-Vell, Syzygy Darklock/Adam Warlock and Thanos/Lord Papal is purely coincidental of course ;\)

However, I digress. DoCM was also written in such a way that Marv had no choice but to die despite the fact that were some ways they could have saved him.

1. Titan super science can create new bodies, this was shown back when ISAAC computer was operating under Thanos legacy programs and created Elysius and other agents. So why didn't they clone a new, healthy body for him and transfer his mind/spirit?

2. A golden apple of asgard has healing and curative properties

3. Suspended animation until he is cured.

4. The Watcher: if anyone knew of a cure it would have been him.

5. Kronos the "God" of Titan that created Drax the Destroyer by putting the spirit of earthman ARthur Douglas into an artificial, cosmically empowered form to hunt and kill Thanos. He could have made a new body for Mar_vell and transferred him into it, if not actually cured him

Instead he dies and Marvel is stuck with a Trademark and no character to use it, then they make the overamped Monica Rambeau as the new CM until they realized she was too powerful and depowered her a lot for a time.

Then came Genis, son of Mar-Vell and soon he is made into a near copy of his father in terms of costume and powers and linked to Rick Jones. Then came editorial mandate and he is dead.

Phyla was never going to be CM and when she declared she was CM, Thanos scoffed at her.

Then Carol meets a Phoenix revived Mar-Vell and after he throws his new life away to save his people she takes the name in honor of him and their unrequited sexual tension/love.

In fact instead of Jean Grey always being the Phoenix, Mar-Vell would make a better host.

Yeah, well... THOR is his name, too.

Yeah, she should still be alive thanks to the retcon. She's supposed to be living on Titan, but lately it seems no one can live on Titan.

Thing is, if he comes back, it needs to be in a HUGE way, to the point of being THE Captain Marvel, imo. Carol gets no series and no name, ONLY Mar-Vell. Otherwise, there's really no point in bringing him back.

Well we need another universal event like the Phoenix Force returning to Earth which is how he was brought back last time.

Marv would make a good Phoenix host and this time the Phoenix completely BURNS the cancer out of him, not put it in stasis.

If Carol reverts back to being Ms Marvel I wouldn't mind.

Thanos of course would make for the usual universal threat, but he is again Death's paramour and agent so would she allow for Marv's return? only if Thanos was out of control again.

Death and Eternity agreeing that Marv is needed would be a good way, however Marv must still CHOOSE to come back. He had to CHOOSE to become the Protector when EON put him on trial, and at the end he CHOSE to accept the kiss of death and go into the light.

Nah, we really don't need another Phoenix story. Ever.

But Marvel would. They'v now invested millions in her maintaining the name. It'll never be Mar-Vell's again... or Monica's.

Well, Thanos and Death are on the outs these days.

If you go by the recent Starlin Infinity Trilogy, Adam Warlock is back and Thanos is with Death again.
