Ben Reilly - Scarlet Spider 007 (2017)
WHO IS THIS Ben Reilly and what has he done with the evil, evil person he was during Clone Conspiracy?! In some ways this alignment change (closer to the core Peter Parker personality) seems a bit unevenly rushed; on the other hand for the most part this issue was probably the best issue of the run - certainly the most thought provoking. Maybe an intention of this chapter was to rush Ben along into returning to his fan-fave believable good guy personality/essence of the past. And sure, his (pun revisited) "brush with death" is a solid reason for his act(s) of unselfish, sacrificial, altruism here.
Of course, the issue focussed on cosmic entity Death and the state of Death in the MU. All the cool clones of the MU, take heart, you can cite this issue as proof you have genuine, unique, souls of your own. And readers take note of this, and all the metaphysical and metaspiritual online debates around the treatment/existence of all the throwaway/disposable clones that the many good guys deal with.
Nice to know Thanos will never get the booty call he craves and it seems... appropriate that Deadpool really had hellish hijinx with Death in canon (disclaimer: haven't actually read them all to say "IS" appropriate). It was also nice to get so much good humor typical of selected PAD issues that end up being special. Appreciated the "REVOLVING DOOR" acknowledgement and the Marlo Chandler clarification.
So, now Ben has a new quest: BE A GOOD GUY. And a new (easyfix) face to go with it. It looks like the protagonist/antagonist dynamic with Kaine just got a new twist too.
Good art. Perfect cover. Recommended read.
