And so here we are, the end of the Ryan Stegman era, brief as it was, and the end of our current timeline. By story's end, Normie has overcome the curse of the Goblin (off panel) , whilst Annie has become a teenager over the course of one page.
This one was fairly pacy, which again is the biggest blight of this series...the storylines are too short, and thus everything has to be crammed into the second half with barely a competent and well stuck landing. Annie at one point asks MJ what's "up" with her symbiote...yet we're never shown it acting erratic whatsoever, and the manner in which it's finally killed off of is literally "gone in sixty seconds" (the seconds it takes you to read a couple of pages featuring it)
The twist with Ms.January controlling the Goblin suit is left without much motivation...she says she's doing it for Harry, but we're lacking any sign of a relationship she had with him to fuel this drive for revenge...was this why Liz divorced Harry before his death? That he was having an affair with January? Interesting, but it's frustrating it must be a no-prize for now on my end.
Peter tried siphoning off the Goblin's suit, which has absorbed the X-Men's powers, or tried to overload it using his own Regent tech based abilities, but he just drained himself of all power...power Normie supplies himself again via some kind of orb...may I ask how Peter gets his powers back from it? Because they never explain it.
So many questions, and yet despite the baffling storytelling (when the ASM newspaper strip has told a more competent story lately than this one issue, you know you're in trouble) , I still found some enjoyment in it, there is heart and sincerity to the Parkers as they risk their lives for each other, and Annie's message about love and using your heart over your head is a nice message...but it just sucks when I have to tell critics I understand them when they say RYV is'nt a solution to the spider-marriage conundrum, and why it needs to be based back in the "real" Marvel 'verse.
Still, here's hoping the new era lacks any shortcomings
