New Talent Showcase 2017 001

> The latest graduates from the DC Talent Development Workshops show off their skills in stories starring some of DC’s greatest characters. In these tales, Poison Ivy fights an ancient demon, Doctor Fate is confronted by the cost of magic, Red Hood and Duke Thomas face off in a training day simulation and so much more!

Red Hood & Duke: Wannabe X-men Danger Room exercise. Really starting to hate when Clayface is unrealistically abused as a Mud Room battery source.

Katana: Good character piece/adventure for Tatsu. Sappy sellout scenario for Waller.

Nightwing: Good character piece/adventure for Nightwing. Confounding Kumbaya Calvary trope for an ending that starts the battle that we won't see. Argh.

Poison Ivy: Ivy tries a horror direction episode. Meh. DC is botching her character by moving her character where ever the wind blows. Ironically the best art of all these anthology tales. What? She has methane breath now, too?

Deadshot: Good character piece/adventure for Tatsu. Curious if his brother-killing was his pre-Rebirth origin.

Doctor Fate: Couldn't get past the 2nd page. Too freaky, not in the mood.

Wonder Woman: Disappointing. Opening prologue set in past where we get 2 pages for Hippolyta to tell Young Diana the Golde Lasso is pretty cool treasure. Meh. Cut to PROBABLY the present between PROBABLY next to last or next arc in the current run. We see The (Smithsonian Underground) Archive. This hidden chamber holds countless unidentified magic items of unchecked powers. The story makes it out as the most key stronghold of untapped WMD's - and yet, doesn't DC already have a number of similar artifact strongholds (whose names escape me ATM) for several acronym organizations (whose names escape me ATM)?? Anyways, in spite of that, it was still more interesting than the banter between Diana and Steve. Their characterization was okay but their dynamic was boring. Cut to whatever gov't stooges are running The Archive and the boss is, of course, some alien masquerading to rule with the artifacts. He's is P.O.'ed that WW knows more than he does and hulks out to gargantuan size. The troops mobilize but WW is already there and attacking with one of the magic weapons she identified. Interruption: another 1 page flashback with Hip telling Di that a lie detector is a pretty cool power. Meh. Then the tale frustratingly ends with the start of the battle, we won't see, between Amazon and antagonist. Argh.
