Immortus is Kang. Their real name is Nathaniel Richards. They're descended from Reed's father (also named Nathaniel Richards) via Reed's unnamed half-brother from Nathaniel's second wife Cassandra who is from an alternate earth.

I just ignore all these crazy convolutions. Why do writers waste time on such nonsense? How does making them the same person make Kang and Immortus more interesting? How does making them a descendant of Nathaniel Richards make them more interesting? Either Kang and Immortus are cool because of their villainy or else they're not cool, period. Family trees do not impart coolness. Being somebody's future or past self does not impart coolness. Show me their schemes and counter-schemes. That's all I care about. Their schemes and counter-schemes. And maybe, once in a blue moon, their romantic relationships, sick and horrifying though they might be.

Yeah Kang and Immortus are just rotten characters IMO. That's why they go through these convolutions as you called it. They're not strong characters in their own right. They're a house of cards on the verge of crumbling under the weight of their own illusion.

That said I usually have no problem with a character with a family tree. Families are interesting. But not in this situation involving time travelers. (or robots or clones)
