I don't really think JMS's Nighthawk ever really had a place in this universe. No tears.

Yeah, on 616 you don't get to kill bad guys and stay in business unless you're perpetually on the run like Frank Castle, and Nighthawk isn't supposed to be that sort of character. He's supposed to be an alternate Batman, guardian of his city. (Frank isn't a guardian of anything. He can't be. He's just a killing machine.)

I also think Nightshade has become lesser for taking up the Nighthawk mantle.

It will all depend on how she gets written. If she gets shoehorned into the Nighthawk mold of being all belligerence all the time then yes, she's diminished. If instead she continues to be written as a smirking maniac who finds her bliss in mayhem, her inner peace in robots and dangerous chemistry, and her redemption in risking her life for the sake of others, then instead of being diminished by the Nighthawk identity, she may instead cause the Nighthawk identity to be enriched.

I'm not a fan of the costume, however. She needs to ditch it. Be Nighthawk but with a new look.

Or don't be Nighthawk. That's really the best option. Nightshade is a perfectly good name. The explanation could be, "Everybody hated Nighthawk. Bad guys,.good guys, everybody. Taking on his identity did me no favors. So I'm continuing his mission but not his name."
