Guns don't kill people, people may've seen Batman's guns do so way back in the Early Days but for even longer it has been a respectable defining characteristic that he avoids them.

Agreed. On a whim, Googled "Batman holds gun" and got these images. Maybe someone more versed in Batcanon can cite which ones are NOT from stories about the prime universe -at the time- Batman?

Under Kane and Finger, but then the Comic Code mandated that he couldn't kill anymore. Also, I would add the classic Ten Nights Of The Beast storyline. Batman locked the KG Beast in a room and left him to die. At the time, it was pretty clear that he more-or-less killed him.
