Good review. Right on the money, I think. My older daughter, her husband, and my cousin joined me in the theater yesterday evening, and we all loved the movie, because it was a serious film. Now don't misunderstand me. I like funny superhero movies. Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy were both great. But I also like serious superhero films, especially ones that manage to get political by showing where politics and conscience intersect, which is what happens when your characters (or some of them) have more questions than answers.
Thankfully the humor was limited. Everett Ross provided some of it.
I think even heavily comedic movies should be low on bathos. For example, "Coco" is primarily a comedy aimed at children. But when it does have dramatic moment, those dramatic moments are not undercut by bathos. I've actually come to hate bathos. It just gets in the way of the drama, even in comedy-dramas. A good comedy-drama compartmentalizes the comedy and drama in a well-timed way.
