I hope Spenser can get out of this and do the run he really wants to do. I always felt that this Secret Empire stuff while interesting, feels editorial. Spenser has said that he loves Gruenwald's run and that I think he really wants to take a crack at that type of story. Give it a year when Steve is trying to redeem himself by setting up the Captain America Hotline and traveling America on a motorcycle with D Man and Falcon and we might see some fun stories again that, while political, can at least be not as politically charged as this one. Spenser is a fun writer. Loved his Jimmy Olsen. His Ant Man is quite fun. If he was given the book as "Captain America on the road with D Man and Sam Wilson", that would be something I would totally eat up. And its not that I totally dislike Secret Empire is an interesting idea. But it really does feel weird to see Spencer doing this.

- l.k.

The best work Spencer has done in his entire run is the wresling issue a few months back in Sam Wilson.

That was a brilliant one-off story that left all the politics at the door, and took us back to a time of heroes fighting villains in a genuinely fun little tale.

Theres no doubt he can write this kind of story - his previous work on Ant Man and Superior Foes of spider-man are evidence of that - if only he would remove the stick from his arse and get off his damn soap box.

All of Spencers best ideas for Cap belong to Mark Gruenwald. Theres a fine line between being inspired by another writer, and being derivative.

Secret Empire however is a train wreck, and at this point i dont think theres any way it gets resolved without some sort of cosmic reset.
