What the two films do share in common however is each has a hero completely avoidibly dying in an aircraft.

Wasn't just the plane, there was that 'After the war, the girlfriend sees a picture of the soldier that didn't live to see the end of the war'.

That wacky french soldier, kiss the girlfriend before boarding the doomed plane, the shield, badguy killing his/her's superiors, A Steve on a motorcycle (I think it's in Chris Pine's contract that every movie he makes he has to ride a motorcycle).

They didn't hurt the movie, WW was good enough that we overlooked those things, plus when you look at all superhero origin stories, they practically copied that 78 Superman movie.
