I remember some episode of South Park where the boys got captured by Al-Kaida or something and pretended to be Canadian thinking the terrorist would then let them go. Kind of funny to imagine an extremist would see a Canadian (or a European) as vastly different from an American.

Historically this HAS helped Americans in certain situations. That is identifying as Canadian. Being an American abroad statistically has made some difference in a negative way.

Sure, but not if you get captured by Al-Kaieda. Its not like they are gonna apologise and let you go."Oh, you're Canadian? Oh, sorry, off you go. Have a nice time."

You'd like that film about a British journalist who gets thrown in a Soviet Gulag for being an "American" spy. He spends the whole film telling his captors that he is British, not American. Think it helped?

In one scene where he is nearly dying they keep calling him "cowboy". With his last breath, through bloody lips, he keeps insisting he is British.
