This came up on a Spider-man board, and I thought it would make a good discussion here.

What are people's thoughts on this term? I think it's become fashionable to write off any attempt towards political correctness with a SJW label. I think it's become dismissive and mocking, and personally I hate it.

I recognize that there are people who can go to far in their pursuit of political correctness, and those people are probably rightly deserving of mockery. But by and large, I think political correctness exists to show empathy for people who aren't like you, and I think that's a good thing.

At its worst, I think the SJW label is used to justify prejudices and racism. I would like this term to disappear entirely.

I personally feel that it is a necessary and essential terminology that can be used against these PC extremists and if it disappears then we'll be worse off without it. Its a useful check and balance.

Im not talking about moderate PC where we are told that racist comments are unacceptable and sexist behaviour towards women (or vice versa! Sexism against men is on the rise) is not appropriate or gentlemanly. I mean these PC extremists who just demand things repetitively and as loudly as possible simply just because they feel they are owed it. Im not so jaded that I believe the western world is a 100% fair meritocracy where people progress based on their work, and their commitment, it isn't. There is still a lot of who you know over what you know. But meritocracy is the fairest outcome where its down to you, and if you mess it up you have only yourself to hold responsible.

A lot of people get called social justice warriors because of the PC extremists and how loud and vocal they are as in everything its always a few that ruin it for all. Case in point; I love 4x4 off road driving. But a few 4x4 drivers drive off road illegally and then all drivers get blamed. Its not fair. But its how it is.

Can social justice warrior be used to justify undue prejudices? Absolutely. As with all things, it can be abused in the wrong hands. But sometimes it can be appropriate, case in point: A program recently started here in the UK called "Is love racist?" Which is utterly absurd and I refuse to watch it. How can you take feelings like that and call it racist? If a white woman rejects the advances of a black man, she is racist? How, she just doesn't fancy him. If an asian man rejects the advances of a white woman is he racist? He might prefer black women over white women. Humans are animals that can live by logic and instinct, love and attraction is for the vast part not based at all on logic. So to me this program is bullshit and the work of social justice warriors trying to stir things up and make us feel needlessly guilty.

As long as OTT PC exists, then so will social justice warrior branding. The branding will disappear when OTT PC does and not really before.
