It is generally annoying. It seems to be a catch all statement to cover what a given person does not approve of in the first place.

This came up on a Spider-man board, and I thought it would make a good discussion here.

It has come up on the Thor board, the battle board and probably others too.

What are people's thoughts on this term? I think it's become fashionable to write off any attempt towards political correctness with a SJW label. I think it's become dismissive and mocking, and personally I hate it.

Yeah, I would generally agree. I think there is a major push back for some reason against PC. But what that is in a grander overview is a bit confusing.

To some it means they get to say whatever offensive thing they want. Others are much more moderate about it and usually use it explaining what they think are others pushing views on them. Generally views they do not agree with but not ones that they do agree with.

In my view, the whole thing sort of devolves into some groups just wanting to be jerks to others and not be called out on it.

I recognize that there are people who can go to far in their pursuit of political correctness, and those people are probably rightly deserving of mockery. But by and large, I think political correctness exists to show empathy for people who aren't like you, and I think that's a good thing.

I would agree with that. I also think it depends on the view of the person. Some take it pretty far. And they ignore the fact that social norms themselves are political correctness as we tend to call it now.

It also starts blending in to major misconceptions about the First Amendment. Some things are always going to be more acceptable to say than others and it can vary depending on the group you are in or surrounded by.

In general, I never thought of it as being PC. Just not being a jerk to people.

At its worst, I think the SJW label is used to justify prejudices and racism. I would like this term to disappear entirely.

It can do that for sure. I think for many it is a response to what they think is pushing a message on them.

The most virulent of those that tend to use it often have connotations that are not nice and along the lines you imply. Not all though. However, after somebody says it the conversation will only go one of two ways. With a likely one being offended.

Depending on context it can dismiss entire important movements or concerns with a general accusation.
