This came up on a Spider-man board, and I thought it would make a good discussion here.
What are people's thoughts on this term? I think it's become fashionable to write off any attempt towards political correctness with a SJW label. I think it's become dismissive and mocking, and personally I hate it.
I recognize that there are people who can go to far in their pursuit of political correctness, and those people are probably rightly deserving of mockery. But by and large, I think political correctness exists to show empathy for people who aren't like you, and I think that's a good thing.
At its worst, I think the SJW label is used to justify prejudices and racism. I would like this term to disappear entirely.
I often wonder if the people who use it as a slight truly understand its pejorative origin. As far as I know the term was pretty neutral until a few years ago, thanks in part to the Gamergate movement co-opting and applying the negative connotation. This same movement was responsible for online-harassment of female game developers and critics--death and rape threats (both against the women themselves and their loved ones), doxing ... just a lot of vile stuff. Pretty ironic that a term used to derided feminists and social progressives gets a lot of its pejoration from a violently misogynistic movement.
While I think PC can go too far, it really annoys me when SJW is bandied about, partly because people put little thought into its use. Like Fake News. That phrase was practically non-existent before Trump. Now his lemmings throw it around without a second thought, and in most examples the phrase doesn't even properly apply. SJW is just an excuse for people to mindlessly dismiss real issues by claiming any and all PC is extreme.
