Other presidents have acted based on the foundations set by previous administrations. They may try and take different turns but a fair bit of the time they keep the plan while tweaking it to suit their views and the changing landscape.
Trump seems to proudly look at everybody else as an idea and cast their work aside. Demanding do-overs everywhere. The great deal maker indeed...
Quote:Whatever your opinion of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, it was widely agreed that the issue of Jerusalem was to be settled via a two-state solution. Jerusalem is occupied territory, and any settlements there are illegal. America's recognition of the occupation is not just symbolic, it has legal ramifications.
Quote:Under Trump, America now endorses the Israeli occupation and has forfeited its role as the broker of peace on a two-state solution.
This is fairly consistent with some hard right views on this. That demand Israel be backed without reservation at all times. I imagine he looks at it as a far away place and a way to get his based on board again.
Quote:This may not work out in Israel's favor. By officially removing America from the peace negotiations, the Palestinians will seek statehood and damages via the international courts. Previously, the pretense was that America was operating in good faith for the Palestinians. The international courts will certainly act now.
Yup, it is not good. And it very well could lead to violent conflict in the area. The US was usually a strong ally of Israel but also of Palastine.
Quote:Why did Trump do this? One word: Evangelicals. The Evangelicals have a very... lets say, apocalyptic view of Israel and Jerusalem, and their allegiance to Israel is based on ye old scripture (basically religious anti-Semitism, whereby Jews are fodder for Christian salvation).
Bingo. What Trump is doing is something demanded for the last twenty years or so by many on the religious right. This drum has been beating for a while, but most administrations ignored them to this point and tried to do the right thing.
Quote:The union of Evangelicism with the worst elements of Israel (thus fulfilling the goal of Jerry Falwell) was perilous to begin with, but now things are going to hit overdrive in the months and years to come.
Yeah, it is not a good situation. Not like the situation was even in a great spot before Trump did anything but this shifts it into overdrive.
It is ironic because a few months ago they were big on the two state solution and were sending people to work it out. Now they just toss it aside.
It really does seem that Trump gets all his policy views off of watching Hannity and checking out conservative websites that are not know for factual accuracy.
Look Raist bunnies...
