I think even going back to the original story where he was presented that it's up for debate.

In his conversation with the Watcher Galactus mentions that injuring people is not what he desires. But the Watcher tells him that every world Galactus had destroyed before then was uninhabitable and the end of the story the Watcher says destroying a civilization isn't the answer and Galactus would be fine eating lifeless worlds.

So to me as originally presented Galactus says he didn't want to destroy a world with life on it but was willing to do so even though Uatu says Galactus can survive fine on non inhabited worlds. I'm assuming the worlds with life on them are tastier or more filling than dead worlds.

Galactus is like a carnivore. He could be vegan and stick to worlds without sentient life...but I don't think those worlds are enjoyable to eat. He wants something that tastes good and gives him more energy. He doesn't want to eat lettuce all day.

When I try to diet and not eat meat for a few days I become a lot like Galactus. I can see why he gets irritable.
