Why oh why did they ever abandon the smiling super heroes of Garcia-Lopez?!

Depending on how you look at it, they haven't! There's nothing at all wrong with those John Byrne designs as like Lopez he captures the characters at their best and in an exciting way, but unlike Byrne and his successors I still see the official DC comics 'Garcia-Lopez style guide' being used for commercial retailers on a fairly regular basis, it was a substantial portfolio and well distributed, those images he crafted are perfect representations of those classic characters, and therefore universally recognised by a mass public audience. Garcia-Lopez' work is the ideal for manufacturers and retailers as they cross all age boundaries, in a way that the modern redesigned characters and their 'edgy' artists don't.
