I read most of this a few weeks ago after I ordered it on Amazon. I've been wanting to read this for a loooooong time, since I heard that this was considered possibly the greatest Dr. Doom story (And one of the best Strange stories, as well.). Well, I did think that the art was lush and great, but I was very disappointed in the story. It just seemed too wordy, and there was too much exposition. There really wasn't any humor either, which is not really what I expected from a Roger Stern story. I do think that Doom (And Strange too, for that matter.) was portrayed and written well, but I was expecting something deeper. I guess that I just didn't find it to be as emotional as most reviews lead me to believe. But I just found it to be too exposition heavy, it felt like Claremont was writing it. Maybe I was just expecting more, I don't know. I would give it 3 stars out of 5. It was well-crafted (Which is what I expected from Stern.), but it was mostly average in terms of writing.

Speaking for myself I think it makes a big difference if you had read it back at the time it came out in the late 1980's or some time in the 1990s.

I really don't know why you would expect to find a story about redemption to be humorous.

I think the exposition was necessary to me anyway because it does serve to fill in some gaps young Victor's childhood as told by Boris. We never really knew how his mother died and it links so neatly to Gerry Conway's story in Astonishing Tales #8.

Doom has always been portrayed as self-centered, egotistical and arrogant. But he makes a great sacrifice to redeem someone else while placing his own soul in danger....or maybe even more than it already is. ;\-\)
