Speaking for myself I think it makes a big difference if you had read it back at the time it came out in the late 1980's or some time in the 1990s.
I really don't know why you would expect to find a story about redemption to be humorous.
I think the exposition was necessary to me anyway because it does serve to fill in some gaps young Victor's childhood as told by Boris. We never really knew how his mother died and it links so neatly to Gerry Conway's story in Astonishing Tales #8.
Doom has always been portrayed as self-centered, egotistical and arrogant. But he makes a great sacrifice to redeem someone else while placing his own soul in danger....or maybe even more than it already is.
