Quote:Right now I'm following exactly two Marvel books, Cable and Black Bolt. I plan to add Marvel 2-in-1 and the weekly Avengers title.
Quote:I've been waiting for a Black Bolt solo book for 40+ years. He and Lockjaw are the only Inhumans who really matter to me, and lo and behold, they both appear in this new series!
They are the only ones who matter (I used to like Karnak but good god he's horrible now). But Black Bolt should never have been given a series. (no solo Inhuman ever should really)
Black Bolt works as a supporting character. He should never be in the lime light. He should never speak.
He's a mute king with great power. And he only works within those parameters IMO. But I've said all that before yadda yadda.
Quote:On the Marvel board we recently discussed Black Bolt and in particular the question of whether the reader should be allowed into Black Bolt's head. I came down on the side of YES, the reader not only should but must be allowed into Black Bolt's head, because otherwise Black Bolt simply isn't a workable protagonist, which would leave us with two choices: (1) do a Black Bolt book poorly; or (2) don't do a Black Bolt book.
My belief is that NO we should never be inside his head and he should never be the protagonist. He should always be a supporting character who motivations are kept to himself. Black Bolt doesn't work as a protagonist. To make him work as a protagonist you have to take away the very thing that makes him work as a supporting character...his silence. That's his whole shtick. Take that away and he's nothing. He should be inscrutable.
Quote:The first six issues of the solo book found a way to let Black Bolt actually speak, using his vocal chords, without destroying everything in a five mile radius. The scenario that permitted this has played out now, so we're back to the silent king, but he has a sidekick with telepathic abilities, and I'm hoping this means we will continue to have a view into Black Bolt's thoughts and feelings. Already in this series I've learned how important Lockjaw is to Black Bolt. All these years and I never knew that.
Quote:Are you reading this book?
Yes but I hate it. Because BB speaks. And the art is horrible. And I don't care about any of the other prisoners in the mind jail dimension.
