...the overall perception of the FF as reflected throughout the eyes of their peers, wasn't there.

For me, it can be seen in how the characters are treated throughout the titles in the Marvel Universe during the period Fox has had the rights.  We see things like Reed treated as if he is weird and anti-social.  His portrayal in Civil War was highly unflattering.

Ben becomes a downgraded jobber, a comedy tool, who gets the rocks pounded out of him by D-listers in the Marvel Universe. The Hulk laughs at him.

Johnny is portrayed as perpetual d-bag and despite years of action, is still shown as incompetent, and shallow.

Sue, despite significant power-up is shown to be an unstable house-mom at times, with shadows of Malice looming in the background.  OK, that might be a stretch - Sue's pretty much a rock most of the time.

Now, yes, all Marvel characters have flaws. That is normal for Marvel. But this isn't about flaws, which everyone has, but rather, about how Marvel treats the FF when interacting with other characters, and this comes from the writers and the culture at Marvel.

Based on what I have seen, Marvel seems to have actively worked to downgrade the Fantastic Four and diminish the significance of the FF in the Marvel Universe.  There - I said it. Sometimes it was subtle, sometimes it was overt. But  I do believe the pattern is there.

Exactly. We had a junky out of no where psycho (Sentry) written as the greatest hero of the known Marvel Universe. Not because he was, in any sense at all, but because the editors decided that he was and everyone would treat him this way.

The FF are the flip side of that induced reputation. It doesn't matter what the readers think, they are going to tell you how to feel about the characters.
