Yeah, they've been functional without Reed. Given the Hickman era was "Intelligence is the greatest power in the universe" for the most part, demonstrated by Valeria who I've never been able to grasp how she developed an adult's disposition with so little actual life expreience.
And even without a 'Smart Guy' at the helm, the FF has been functional. Reed and Sue left for a while (joined the Avengers, too, right?) The dynamic is best when it's Reed, Sue, Ben and Johnny but it's not like the team was always treated like D-Listers as soon as Reed left the room. Ben has saved the world a few times without any assistance, after all.
The whole Johnny thing is hard to swallow. Ben is a billionaire also, not sure if that was ever touched on again. Slott knew that as he wrote the too short lived Thing series which dealt with it a bit. but just like Johnny's maturity and development over the decades, it's easily forgotten or intentionally ignored when it's inconvienent.
I really used to like Slott, but I think when he got Spidey he started to enjoy being in the 'boy's club' a little too much and lost the part of his motivation that had attracted me to his work.
And now Marvel treats Johnny and Ben like bums! Having them dumpster dive to save Reed's gear and then delivering it to a kid in the upcoming Moon Girl ("cuz weez don't know dis tech-no-logikal stuff! Har har har!") is embarrassing! Marvel has turned the FF into washed up jokes. The Ben & Johnny comedy act is for comic relief in these sad ANAD titles. Ben is the lovable bull in a china shop. Johnny the irredeemable jerk. It apparently never grows old.
As someone said - incredibly lazy on Marvel's part. Maybe it's just me, but I FEEL like there is a pattern here.
