Quote:That was one of the redeeming parts of Waid's Fantastic Four. He started out badly though, regressing to having Johnny sit around the Baxter building eating cereal and watching TV like he was Franklin's brother instead of uncle. IMO he'd been through too much to revert like that. He was married once to Skrull Alicia for cryin' out loud.
"Johnny was like this in FF #1 so that's how he ought to be, gosh darn it." Same logic that has Reed being drawn like a stringbean and smoking a pipe. Or Doom being written as one-dimensionally megalomaniacal. It's this weird retro stuff, coupled with stupid antics like Johnny becoming Galactus's herald, that turned me off to Waid. I'll be giving him yet another chance to disappoint me in January when he takes over the Avengers weekly title, and only because I want to be able to discuss the comic on these boards.
Still, I don't recall any writer before Waid really delving into what it means to have fire as a power. Credit where credit is due. It's such an important element, too. Johnny, more than most heroes, really needs to be part of a team. He can be the destroyer but he generally can't be the protector and only under narrow circumstances can he be the rescuer. (Because he can turn off his flame around his hand, wrist, and forearm, he can save someone who has fallen from a great height, but he has to set that person down right away before the heat from the rest of his body causes harm.) Johnny and Spider-Man are a great duo because destruction is something Spidey really isn't that good at, whereas protecting and rescuing are two things he excels at.
