I hope it's psychological. Ben had that mental block where he couldn't turn human again because he thought Alicia only loved him as the Thing.

They got their powers from the same place. It stands to reason all of the people affected by cosmic rays can fall into a mental block situation when they're in a deep depression (losing your sister & nephew qualifies...Reed and the hellspawn maybe not so much). Sharon Ventura probably looks like Ben because she can't get over their relationship.
