In the Flash Season 4 Premiere, Barry states, "I'm innocent! I didn't kill anyone!"

This got plenty of people across the internet speculating if the Trial of the Flash is going to be a storyline sometime during season 4 (or maybe sometime in the near future).

One poster on this very forum believes that in order for trial to happen, we gotta have the Reverse Flash. However, I disagree.

Notice what Barry actually says. I quote again, "I'm innocent! I didn't kill anyone!"

That tells me the trial will only be a shadow of what it was in the comics. In the comics, Barry kills the Reverse Flash in order to save Iris. Then "The Flash" is put on trial for murder. Notice that, it's "the Flash" who is put on trial, not Barry Allen. The Flash also wouldn't claim he didn't kill anyone when he actually DID kill the Reverse Flash.

One other point I'd like to address is the Reverse Flash. We all know that Thawne was erased from existence at the end of season 1. Then the writers had him return shortly after that (and without properly explaining HOW). Then at the end of Legends season 2, the Reverse Flash is erased from existence yet again.

Bad enough the Reverse Flash was brought back to begin with, which created problems with continuity and the whole thing not making much sense. But killing him off again only to bring him back after erasing him for a second time would be taking a leap of logic that most fans won't be able to swallow this time around.

In saying that, the Reverse Flash is not going to make a return for Barry's Trial (and that's assuming trial happens). So, my prediction is this:

If the Trial of the Flash happens...

1. It's not going to be the Reverse Flash who gets killed. It's going to be someone else.

2. After the way Iris was nearly killed by Savitar last season in an eerily similar situation in the comics where the Reverse Flash tries killing her, I seriously doubt Iris is going to be used as victim here. But, I could be wrong.

3. Notice that in a previous season, as Barry is going through time, we catch a glimpse of Barry, not the Flash, in a prison jumpsuit. Thus, I believe the Trial will be about Barry Allen and not the Flash. Barry Allen himself will get blamed for a murder he didn't commit, not the Flash.

4. Barry won't kill the guy whose murder gets pinned on him. Based on what Barry says, he claims he's innocent. That means, he didn't kill the guy that dies, but gets the blame for his murder. So, basically someone is setting Barry up for a fall. And that someone is the Thinker.

To summarize: The Trial of "The Flash" will be a shadow of the storyline in the comics. Barry, not the Flash, will be blamed for the murder.

Thoughts?

Yes that was me that stated RF was part of the Trial in the comics.

Since the showrunners seem to love having RF around, his return is not out of the question. Especially since time travel is a part of the show, AND that the Legends are screwing around with the time stream.

It also IS possible that at some point someone could time warp back to the end of Season 1 and stop RF without Eddie shooting himself, thus altering seasons of story.

Not impossible.

However given that they butchered the Flashpoint concept to fit it into a TV show rather then a movie, the trial of the Flash could receive the same treatment.
