You say Grell wrote the title? That could be why.
As an Iron Man fan when he came to that series it felt like all he did was re-hash old storylines and really failed to bring anything new to the table even though he tried.

Don't get me wrong he wasn't terrible, just passable imho.
That said he could have been quite good on this series I missed a lot of GL issues in my day.
