Considering Marvel Studios was able to work out a deal with Sony, it gives a sense of greater possibility. Universal does not seem to be actively pursuing a solo Hulk movie on their own. I think depending on the reaction by the movie goers to Hulk after the Thor Ragnorok film hits, that will be the determining factor.

The Sony deal is completely different from Universal. Marvel wanted to use Spidey so bad they let go of all the profit. They still had the merchandising rights to make up for it. Regardless, they needed to use Spidey, whereas they can already use the Hulk, just not solo.

I understand that Marvel had different issues concerning Sony and Universal studios. But if it comes down to making a "guaranteed" profit or at least having a better chance at one, I can't see why either Studio would balk at the chance.

Another difference is Sony needed a hit and Spidey is one of the franchises it had left. Universal has others to fall back on.

I think that nails it. Universal & Disney haven't come to an arrangement yet because there hasn't been a proven market for a blockbuster new solo Hulk franchise. They all understand, I think, that the rendition of the Hulk they'd put to film so far, particularly prior to Avengers 1, was not resonating with viewers as much as they expected or hoped. I suspect the slow development of the character we've seen so far, which is intended to ramp up between Ragnarok and the two Infinity Saga movies, has been intentional to evolve and in fact merge the two sets of Hulk audiences (fans of the TV show & fans of the comic) through a series of movies --and if fan reaction is HIGH to the new version, it will prove the merits of risking another big-budget gamble on the Hulk's license alone.

The problem is, Marvel already sabotaged those chances by using the Planet Hulk storyline. After that, there's not a lot of storylines to mine (in the sense that would appeal to larger audiences, not just Hulk fans)

I have to disagree with your sentiments here. Almost any story or storyline from an issue of a comic book can be turned into a screenplay by a good creative and imaginative writer. What's more is there is nothing wrong with coming up with a totally unique story.

Other than the use of the subtitles that Marvel Studios borrowed from their comics line, the movies did not mirror the stories in the comics. Only very loosley.

Either way, given how things have ramped up in CGI wise/intensity, they'd have to do something REALLY spectacular to make a Hulk solo film worth seeing. That's going to be tough to do when Universal gets half of anything made.

Cth...I always read your posts. You have greater vision than that to limit what could be done today in movies with just using CGI as the main draw. Big explosions and action is thrilling, but you still need a well thought out story. But Hulk's biggest problem has not been CGI, it's the horrible one dimensional characterization of the title character himself i.e. Hulk and Banner.

I strongly believe it will happen.

I don't see it ever happening.

Ever is a long time.
