Quote:I'm starting to wonder if the curse of the Hulk isn't necessarily Banner's alone at this point. Before PAD came onto the title, no one wanted to write the title.
To be fair, that had less to do with the fans and more to do with the fact that Mantlo burned out on the character, then Byrne and Milgrom kinda made things into a tangled mess.
Quote:PAD's 2nd return didn't get the reception you'd expect from all the online comments (yeah, I know, never trust the internet..)
Never trust the Internet, but as PAD said on this very board, the lukewarm fan reception didn't help when he decided that working on the Hulk was not a priority compared to the other opportunities coming in.
Quote:Pak was heralded as the next PAD by fans and like PAD, his return to the character has been starting to take a serious nose dive, especially as of recent.
I honestly haven't heard much criticism of Pak's run (arguably, because nobody's reading it). It seems to me that the main problem right now is that fans never really accepted Cho as the Hulk.
Quote:I guess what I'm getting at is, does anyone else think it's partially the fans fault that no one seemingly wants to write the character? Are we too quick to turn on writers instead of placing blame on editorial where it largely deserves to be?
Yes. Mark Waid is Exhibit A in this regard. His Hulk was definitely not my cup of tea, but he got way more online harassment from fans than anybody deserved.
Fans could stand to remember that liking a character doesn't mean you own it, and that getting too worked up over imaginary characters is not really worth it.
Quote:Add in the confusion of which personality/incarnation to write and it's easy to see why it's hard to keep a writer on the book. At least with the release of Thor Ragnarok, that problem will become a little less problematic, in terms of what Hulk will be in everyone's mindset going forth.
I'm not sure that writing the Hulk is any harder than writing another long-lasting comic character. The main issue seems to be that, for most of the 21st century so far, Marvel has had no idea what they want to do with the character.
Quote:Anyways, just musing.. anyone have a list of writers you'd like to see take on the Hulk?
But also Paul Cornell, Gail Simone, Kurt Busiek, and G. Willow Wilson, to name a few.
