Quote: He started out as a "Gypsy", and his family was dirt poor and his mother a witch. That right there is problematic because it feeds into the stereotype that Roma are trash eastern mystics.
Maybe that's a problem...but in my mind that at least gives him some ethnic identity. One of the biggest Marvel characters is Roma as originally conceived by his creators...he wasn't retconned into being Roma (like say Nightwing was). And he isn't some sort of trashy gypsy stereotype...he's a sophisticate with a wide knowledge of art, history and science who rules his own country.
Quote:In some versions of his origin, he then spends his youth, in part, stealing, a "gypsy" thief.
Well he was a homeless orphan wasn't he? Orphans got to eat. That shouldn't be taken as a smear against his ethnic group. His mom being a witch...I grant that's a stereotype.
Quote: Even in versions that don't include stealing, he spends his youth as a terrorist. And since Roma are originally from the same part of the world as Indians and Pakistani, this is problematic.
That's not worth worrying about. He's white for all intents and purposes. Maybe not white enough to join the Aryan Brotherhood or but still plenty white.
Quote:He is from Eastern Europe and of more purely Eastern blood, and is constantly on about honor. Portraying Easterners as all about "honor", and "honor" being treated as a barbaric form of morality compared to Western morality is an old, problematic trope, and Doom is steeped in it.
He's from a white family in Eastern Europe not Asia. Calling him an Easterner is disingenuous. And assuming he plays into Eastern stereotypes about honor when he for all intents and purposes is not visibly Asian in the slightest is a laughable stretch of logic.
Quote: Finally he's dressed in armor that evokes a Soviet design, with all its little rivets and grey steel. Combined with his general contempt for democracy, it screams of outdated Eastern European stereotypes.
He's not tied to communism so that makes him better than almost any Chinese or Russian character ever created by Marvel.
I don't see why Doom should be changed to be made more palatable for a modern audience of hyper critical whiners looking for excuses to be offended. Fine he's outdated. Making him modern will just make him worse. I don't want to see Doom at Starbucks ordering a Chai Latte and complaining about their wireless hotspot while left swiping women on Tinder.
He's a larger than life conqueror in the vein of Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great or all those fascinating despots that make history actually interesting to read about. He shouldn't be minimized. He should be glorious.
