I just finished binging The Defenders, and it occurred to me what a perfect story this would have been for The Mandarin, because it featured both Chi mysticism, and a metaphor for fracking.

In this story, the Hand are mystics who control tremendous political and corporate power. They are using that power to mine out a chi-rich skeleton to keep themselves immortal. This is causing earthquakes very similar to the sort created by fracking. All the lives of the common people of New York are threatened because a bunch of rich scum want to mine out something that will let them afford a perfect private healthcare metaphor.

This would have been a perfect, perfect, perfect story for The Mandarin. Chi-mysticism, corporate intrigue, rich aristocrats devouring everything to make themselves more, perfect.

I loved this show, but at the same time I felt a maddening stab of envy. The Mandarin should have been given this storyline. I think I'll go look at a picture of The Mandarin killing Hand ninjas in X-Men 257 to cheer me up.

Yeah but then don't you have to see Wolverine stare down the Mandarin? Logan should be a speed bump at best for him.
