I actually think of the exploitation and enslavement stuff more in Christopher Columbus terms than "yellow peril". He's basically someone who started out as a blend of Roman Sionis/Penguin and X-23, and then became a Christopher Columbus type, exploring, conquering, enslaving, exploiting, stealing.

But I'm just brainstorming here, since that's really all we can do anyway. I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of a story that explains away the fact that the rings "sentience" is actually a hoax.

Gillen already did that: at the end of the story about them being sentient, he had the Recorder explain that this was a recent upgrade caused by contact with the villain Stark faced earlier. (I forget his name, the one behind the genetic engineering of Stark's brother) Kieron Gillen was pretty good about putting the toys back in the box on his way out the door. So the idea that this was a long-time thing was retconned literally at the end of the story that suggested it.
