You can have Japanese ninja and Mongolian hordes and even have Rambo run around Vietnam if you like, but no Chinese villains. Not even bit players like the guy in "Batman: the Dark Knight" or that Chinese pirate in the third "Pirates of the Caribean". The Chinese dictatorship is just completely nuts. These are people who organ-harvest the Falun Gong for cheap transplants. Make no mistake, that government is Nazi-level evil. Their censorship of movies is by far the least of their crimes.

Still, I am convinced that Disney-Marvel don't want their movies to be a total failure and that's their initiative.

For example, in 2008:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/apr/21/china.france

As you can see, the Chinese government didn't even need to be on the front line. The collective behaviour of people did all the job.

Yep, my home country managed to piss off both the people in USA ("freedom fries" & Iraq) AND in China (Carrefour & Tibet) and lose sales in the process. As far as I know, it is a unique performance in recent history. Both times, we were right to do so and, both times, it cost us more than it paid off.

On the contrary, Disney-Marvel are sufficiently cunning & opportunistic to apply self-censorship to their movies and there won't be any commercial problem for them.
