See this is the bit I dont get.

If its just a personal choice of yours then fine, but to dislike it on the principle that you think its out of character is frankly inaccurate. Frank has been successfully brainwashed on a number of occasions, as have heroes who would probably be considered mentally tougher than him such as Cap and Logan. Logan in fact is the worst offender because despite being specially training to resist brainwashing he has killed literally dozens if not hundreds whilst under the control of others.

If youre telling me that you just dont like the fact Frank has succumbed to control then fine, but if youre saying that it ruins the story because you think its completely impossible for frank to be successfully brainwashed then thats just ridiculous. He does afterall have more of a history with mental illness and loss of control than most characters out there.

Also, 'hate beams' if anything should have a more profound effect on someone like Frank who is literally full to the brim with a variety of hate. Cap - who hasnt got an ounce of hate in him probably wouldnt have broken a sweat.

Oh, it's not the brainwashing that I'm upset about, it's the fact that he killed an innocent and didn't own up to it or anything. He just basically brushed it aside. Frank is a normal human so he has no defense against mind control of any kind so when it happens isn't a big deal. But unlike a normal human he's got a lot of psychological issues. Killing an innocent even under mind control should've had more effect on him. Like Blackstone said, he'll probably commit suicide if it happened. In the Ultimate universe he was running around crying and screaming at cops to punish him when he thought he killed Spiderman by accident.

Frank lost his family in a crossfire between mobsters. For him to kill an innocent in a similar situation would be devastating to his own damaged psyche. There was a Daredevil vs Punisher mini-series (probably not in continuity as it's never been reference since) that came out around the same time where he did just that. He hits a bystander by accident and he just drops his gun and lets Daredevil beat him. The bystander survived but if he had died, Frank would've been devastated.

Other heroes maybe able to brush it off saying that they weren't in their right mind and stuff like that but not Frank Castle. Killing an innocent would haunt him more than it would others and this run by Fraction pretty much brushed it off as a minor footnote.
