Reply Subj: Holy Harem Harlots of Harlem! Iron Fist 8-9, Annual [SPOILERS]

Previous Post

I was planning on holding out and not reading the current Iron Fist storyline until it was completed. However, the Annual with Brereton and Chaykin artwork was just too tempting so I read them tonight. I'm glad I did because the 7 Capital Cities of Heaven storyline is a lot of fun.

I've read some comments from other posters that they don't really care for the Brubaker/Fraction additions to the Iron Fist mythos. I think they're great, it really adds to Danny's story and legacy. Even though he died at the conclusion of the first arc, Orson Randall is still a strong presence. I'd buy a series that featured Orson and his crew that took down those Harlem Harlots!

I liked the focus on Danny's father in issue #8 and I'm curious to see why he never became an Iron Fist. I suspect Davos will play a role here. The other champions all look quite mysterious and formidable. Fat Cobra reminded me of E. Honda from Street Fighter.

In issue #9 the question is: Did Danny really throw the fight? I don't think he did. He is going to have to step it up to stand a chance in the final battle. The revelation that Orson Randall has a daughter was a surprise, and I'm willing to bet we'll see a lot more of her. Actually, based on the what is revealed in the annual, I wonder if she can make a valid claim to the Rand fortune?

The Annual was the highlight of the 3 issues, as Bru and Fraction turned up the fun factor and delivered an issue that felt like a chapter or two from Sin City. When the Iron Fist series first started I groaned when Hydra got involved, but we now learn that Hydra and the Iron Fist have a long history and many of Danny's present headaches can be attributed to Orson's adventures. A funny, action-packed read with great art by Brereton and Chaykin.

Of course now I can't wait to see how this all plays out. Will Danny master enough Iron Fist techniques to survive the tournament? What secrets will Orson's past reveal and will they help Danny stop the Hydra train? Will the bride of Nine Spiders vent her rage against Danny after she never got a chance with Randall? Will Luke, Misty and Colleen have anything substantial to do? Will Danny make Fat Cobra eat fist? Will Jeryn Hogarth's mom lose another finger? \:\-\)

Good stuff.

-like the fact that #9, bluntly states that the Annual follows; and that the A-1 states that 10 will follow it. It's dissappointing that readers must pay an extra $1 for an annual that would've been better as a stand alone story or at least an optional bookend to the arc continuity. Given the quality of the whole package published, however, it didn't end up that I avoided the $4.75. It would be real nice if somewhere in the arc they state where in NA and H4H continuity The 7(hey, just noticed it wasn't a symbol) Capital Cities of Heaven occurs.

-while the Annual art team gets fair nod, Aja-Allen-Hollingsworth-Koblish-Martinez-Chung combined to creat a nicely flowing visual work in #9. Readers can actually feel the wonderful movement sequences (like in DD lately).

> I've read some comments from other posters that they don't really care for the Brubaker/Fraction additions to the Iron Fist mythos.

-he can 'hear sweating' like Daredevil now, regenerate like Wolverine, heal like Elixir, speed of Quicksilver(caught the bullet), energy project like pick-an-A-lister... hopefully it doesn't ruin the character when this arsenal of powers will definitely change Iron Fist. Sure, this writing team seems to imply it takes extreme concentration and isn't instantaneous/automatic but the next team to handle IF might not manage these nuances the same and ruin Danny.

> I think they're great, it really adds to Danny's story and legacy.

-it is great so far. Mostly because the reader gets to learn of the uber increases of the protagonist, simultaneously, as opposed to Sentry where many of his power displays seem unexplained

> Even though he died at the conclusion of the first arc, Orson Randall is still a strong presence. I'd buy a series that featured Orson and his crew that took down those Harlem Harlots!

-guess Orson wasn't at Danny's current uber levels at that stage. ;\)

-Harlem Harlots! That was a catchy name! And neat fight. What a crew too! IF, Wendell, Chores, Shadu, Vera Vidal, Erskine(no relation to Super Soldier Serum?) and of course, BARKO!! Move over Bathound, Barko deserves a banner! And since my slot opened up...

-liked the opening flashback, bonding of sorts, 'tween Davos and his sparring partner but the flashback in the flashback was disruptive, at first, but actually well placed but only AFTER the fight sequence and the realization the 'Many years ago' was actually MANY many years ago and it was Wendell and not Danny. Usually the Narration Squares addressing the character has always been to Danny specifically.

> The other champions all look quite mysterious and formidable. Fat Cobra reminded me of E. Honda from Street Fighter.

-being so videogame challenged, I'll take your word. I do notice a lot of Power Ranger parallels with the villains and the naming of the martial maneuvers from when THAT TV show hot 1st incarnation. Fatty's tatoos look cool and his power level seems unbeatable. Just imagine the level of Prince Of Orphans, a gambling man, who seems most likely to face IF in the finals!

-the yeilding was excellent forshadowing inclusion to wonder what Danny would do. The daughter was an excellent introduction to keep the title fueled with intriguing storylines. A TINY, but sincere, nitpick from her fight with IF is that the "I!" and the "CAN!" should have been tilted in HER direction.

-The Ancient Bridge Machine she was sentenced to watch over was intriguing and had a great tech look inspired from earlier issues. The name Phineas was a welcome tidbit too.

-HYDRA is working out great as a foe. Enjoying the symmetry of the color scheme with IF. The Hydra on the scope was great placement for readers to deduce the assassins -- and the halfhidden logo at the bottom was an awesome touch and made me laugh remembering the comedy of Agent Bob's conditioning in this month's Cable&Deadpool.
