This is how comics have operated for decades, really.

Retire old characters.
Replace with new characters.
Bring back the old characters.
Repeat.

Yeah, since the 80's when Steve Rogers resigns as Captain America and John Walker takes over. Resolved when Rogers reclaims his identity and Walker becomes USAgent.

Tony falls back into the bottle and hard, Rhodey suits up and becomes the new Iron Man. Tony slowly recovers, Rhodey goes a bit crazy, we get a clash of old vs new, Rhodey gets his head on straight, Stane attacks and kills a friend of theirs, Tony suits up in the new Silver Centurion armor and is Iron Man again. Rhodey served as backup until he was nearly burned to death in his armor, years later he is War Machine.

THOR: replaced long ago briefly by Red Norvell, years later by Eric Masterson, red was briefly returned at one point as I recall.

HULK: Rick Jones is briefly a Hulk, Grey Hulk then returns and cures Rick. For years we have the Grey Hulk until one day Banner gets so angry he literally tears out of his skin as he becomes the Green Hulk again. Then it is a war of personalities for awhile until Samson briefly cured that.
