I'm not sure that's true. I'm not sure it was a bad idea, it was just done badly. Lucas made Anakin be a super-nice kid who seems to be manipulated, rather easily, into doing evil. It makes him seem like a dolt. It's like Rev was saying about Doom, he should have been an evil little cuss from the start. Okay, there was always some good in him, but he should have been sitting on that fence. But the prequels sucked because they didn't find a good balance between the cartoon slapstick of Jar Jar/droids and the dramatic tension of a Jedi going dark. They thought out the Palpatine arc, making him the MVP of the prequels, to the expense of everyone else. Mostly they tried to be too light and fluffy to carry the epic they were trying to tell, one that we knew would end in defeat for the heroes. You can't make a fun poppy trilogy with that conclusion.
