Well it was for kids and I suspect there was a toyline as well. \:\)

Despite it being a "sanitized" Conan for kids, it is pretty well written and has a definitive beginning and end, unlike Masters of the Universe, Thundercats and Voltron in the 80's. They didn't end...they STOPPED.

Well Voltron was sort of like an anime they spliced up, invented new dialogue and plots for and even combined characters. They killed off one of the characters in the Japanese version, replaced him with his brother and just never alluded to it in the American version.

(plug...I really like the new Voltron series on Netflix)

Spoken in the voice of Soundwave "Netflix Voltron, Superior! 80's Voltron, inferior!"

okay seriously while the 80's Voltron will always have its special place in my memory here are the facts about it:

1. The anime series Beast King: GO LION and Armored Fleet Dairugger 15 were taken from Japan and cut up, re-edited, spliced bakc together and heavily SANITIZED in terms of violence to become the VOLTRON franchise.

2. A third anime would have been used to make a third Voltron but reaction to the Vehicle Voltron/Dairugger 15 was.....luke-warm.

Both series as I recall stopped rather then ended then they made an animated movie where the two Voltrons united to defeat Zarkon and Lotor "for good"

In Go Lion the character we knew here as Sven was killed early on, not critically wounded and taken off planet for medical care as in Voltron. The character that would appear later was his younger brother in Go-Lion who would perish along with Lotor at the end. In Voltron it was a recovered Sven who appeared to die fighting Lotor both survived due to 80's censorship.

Also in Go-Lion there was no Galaxy Garrison, and the pilots of the lions were among the last survivors of Earth. They went to check on Earth and returned to it in time to watch the planet explode thanks all the harm the aliens did to it.

Also other characters would perish in Go-Lion.

Also the story of how Go_Lion was split into the 5 Lions made far more sense then in Voltron.

Dairugger 15, they are exploring the cosmos looking for planets to colonize, the evil aliens want a new planet to call home before their world perishes. of course they don't want to cooperate and there is war. Eventually it ends with the aliens getting a new world after their corrupt govt is overthrown. Lots of death and destruction.

The only thing the two series had in common was that they were made by the same animation studio in Japan, also their reception in Japan wasn't the greatest, yet when they came here to become Voltron.....well things changed.

The Go-Lion and dairugger DVD's are way out of print, and Dairugger 15 is not that easy to find online.....perhaps one day someone who is kind and has all the episodes will upload them to youtube or something....:)
