I grew up in that time, and played many games, much of which had great music. Off the top of my head, I can think of examples, such as Streets or Rage 1-2 (for the Sega Genesis) and any Final Fantasy game music. Anyone have favorites?

I made a long post with discussion and some Youtube links but I guess too many links because it got trashed for spam. So let's see if I can sum up:

Castlevania - Bloody Tears
Mega Man 2 - especially Flashman
Solar Jetman - Braveheart
Blaster Master - Area 4 and I think 3 is good
Zelda - heard some really good mixes
Lemmings - at least on SNES not sure about PC, but it has like 25 songs and most are taken from classical or folk tunes but made really fun and MIDI
