Asking for a friend. Okay, I'm asking for me. I can be my own friend. I miss the feats.

Excitement and intelligence.

Superman (and IMO, a lot of comics) are just a damn slog to go through. Nothing excites me about the character, his interactions with others and the universe at large.

I love New Super-Man precisely because I find it exciting and I can't wait for the next issue to come out... and I find the plotting/the story ideas Gene Leun Yang tells to be intelligent.

He's dissecting notions of democracy and American Pop Culture; using Eastern Mythology as building blocks of character growth; doing his notion of Chaos and Order (in one of the best depictions since Kirby's New Gods)... it's the kind of storytelling i'd kill to see in the main Superman books.

Literally, just read the latest issue, #18, and was grinning ear-to-ear as I turned to the last page.

Reading that book makes me feel like a kid again, picking up Action Comics, Superman, Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes, the New Adventures of Superboy... ranging from writers as the like of Cary Bates, John Byrne, Roger Stern and more back in the 80's and 90's.

I look at the this whole Mr. Oz storyline and think to myself, "This could have and should have been so much better". They could have gone in more exciting and frankly more intelligent directions than what they did, which was just mediocre.

I don't want mediocre. I want super.

I want a cast of characters I give a damn about, I want concepts that are unique, different and told well, I want to see imagination on the what/where/why of the villains along with how Superman defeats them.

The only book I get that from is New Super-Man. And sadly, I don't think it's going to change anytime soon.
