The fact that Superman has been embarking on deep space travel and visits to other planets is a subject writers and editorial have strongly hinted at over the last several years, but with the exception of the Action Comics:Doomed! epilogue never shown or stated explicitly that he could, and does, have the ability for such a feat.
So to see it laid out this issue, and so matter-of-factly, is a fairly wrenching experience.
There does lie some nice character moments herein, though a number of points do strike as being uncomfortable - chief among them the thought that Clark kent, Superman, would choose to make his earth-born son so implicit and fully immersed in the tragedy of Krypton's end, it struck as being far too heavy handed a notion that either Jon or Superman would take the subject to such heart as they did here, Jon having been born on earth and raised as a normal boy surely can never have a full appreciation of connection to a long gone world somewhere out there in space, and for all the diligence that his father shows the matter as to whether Lois is fully endorsing of this education and indoctrination is noticably skipped by.
But despite the disconnect of seeing Superman and Son so casually set off into space and visiting a farway world about to explode it is evident that a new chapter has been turned in the story of Superman. For to be shown now as being so capable of off-world travel reconfigures three decades of accepted truth. Has a door just been opened perhaps to a new avenue for stories, or is this nothing but aberration...?
It will be interesting to watch.
