Action Comics 997

Remind me the known chronology of Zod (and family?) after the Super-Family escaped their Phantom Zone trap and defeated him in a rematch with his Superman Revenge Squad? It seems to be a plot point here but it was not clear to my frazzled memory of that arc.

So, Zod's back. LAST arc had the father/offspring parallel to Kal going with the Lane/Lane side story escape going and NOW they're just dumping another one by adding a Zod/Lor childrearing element to the main story. It's becoming a bit convoluted, at this point, as a Kal Vs Lor clash should've been as good as anticipated. But instead he's just a superbrat and Zod and Kal go at it for round 1.437.

Kal and Booster escaped a temporary alternate Krypton's Past behind that fizzled out of existance because of broken timestream. Or so readers are told. The Zod family motivation is revealed to be from the aftermath of that Superman Revenge Squad arc. Is the writer telling us that the current future Planet Jekuul crisis and surprise encounter with Zod-Family is presumed to naturally follow thru after Action #684 and Zod's existence is just now brought to Kal's attention. Time travel stories understandably have wonky paradoxal logic but this fractured timestream plot pitch peril is just not doing it for me. Isn't DC undermining the this drama by having Zod present as the grand villain in the Present, concurrently in the GL book? And temporal messing of the Doomsday Clock series should follow immediately after this, right?

What made this less appealing was the poorly contrived chosen levels of Krypton radiation merely rendering Superman normal. Should Kryptonite work under a (presumably red) sun that allows the Zod-Family to keep their powers? Why didn't they lose their powers as they got close. Any guesses how 4 heatvision barrages can backfire against 1 unaccessible heatvision defense?

Last ish, the Lane rescue mission was easily the better story. However, this time the reunion with the General was just underwhelming. Especially, Jon meeting his grandfather with a mere "Hi" after punching his way thru a locked door... knob. Even Lois' reaction to finally seeing Jon was shadowing her should've had more... punch to it. Any guesses with the cliffhanger? Jon used superspeed to save them and got then got them all to play possum? And WTH???!!! It's better to keep a trope secret than have Jon just FLY THEM TO SAFETY?

All in all: Ho hum. (Only 3 issues to wait for a jolt.)

Was net to have Superman able to fight pretty well even while reduced, and he did manage to withstand that Planet being blasted apart!
